A Moment in Time with Legends of Indian Arts by Dr. Alka Raghuvanshi

The book, “A Moment in Time with the Legends of Indian Arts” by Dr. Alka Raghuvanshi will be presented by her sister Manisha Gawade on 26th May 2022 at India Habitat Centre from 7 pm onwards. The book is published by Mr. Sanjay Arya. The launch will be done by senior members of the art fraternity including Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree Gurus Raja Radha Reddy, Padma Vibhushan Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Padma Shree Guru Shovana Narayan, National Awardee Mr. Ranbir Kaleka, Celebrated Orissi Guru Sharon Lowen, Padma Shree Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar. The book is an amalgamation of interviews of numerous legends from the world of art including Indian classical dance, Hindustani and Karnatak classical music, paintings, sculpture and theatre. Dr. Alka’s sister Manisha Gawade is carrying forward her legacy. 

The book contains interviews of M.F. Hussain, Manjit Bawa, Krishen Khanna, J. Swaminathan, Satish Gujral, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Yamini Krishnamurty, Kelucharan Mahapatra, Ebrahim Alkazi, Sheila Bhatia, B.V. Karanth, Manohar Singh, Uttara Baokar, M.S. Subbulakshmi, Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ali Akhbar Khan, Krishan Maharaj, Bhemsen Joshi, Malikarjun Mansoor, Balamurli Krishna, Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Girja Devi, Bismillah Khan, Ram Narayan, Pt. Jasraj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

The programme will begin with a classical bhajan by Meeta Pandit of the Gwalior Gharana and an interesting interplay of the three different dance forms Orissi by Padma Shree Ranjana Gauhar along with her group, Kathak by Shinjini Kulkarni, granddaughter of Pt. Birju Maharaj and Rashmi Vaidialingam will be performing Kuchipudi. Binding the show together as the Sutradhar will be well-known television presenter Sadhna Shrivastava.

Paintings by Dr. Raghuvanshi, Manisha Gawade and Harika Gawade will also be on display on the occasion. A short compilation of interviews conducted by the author herself with Pt. Birju Maharaj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ranbir Kaleka and Arun Vadehra audiovisual will be played on the occasion.

Dr. Raghuvanshi’s career both as an author and a journalist spanned over four decades and this programme is a tribute to the great legend who worked tirelessly to bring all arts together and closer- theater, dance, music and painting. She was a passionate believer of the handlooms of India and worked with the various weavers of India to bring to the center stage their dying looms. She took an active part in promoting a saree social media movement, making people aware of the state of the weavers and their need for a wider audience. Her sister Manisha Gawade is now carrying forward this legacy that the author leaves behind.

About the Book

The book contains a rare compilation of interviews of the legends of the art world from all the various arenas of art including Indian classical dance, Hindustani and Karnatak classical music, paintings, sculpture and theatre. Written by the celebrated author and journalist Dr. Alka Raghuvanshi, this book is a historic documentation of the artists interviews spanning over four decades of the authors writing career.

About Dr. Alka Raghuvanshi

Author and Journalist Dr. Raghuvanshi spanned over four decades. Her work is an honour to the great legends who work hard for the culmination of all art forms. Dr. Alka herself was a believer of Indian handlooms. She worked with numerous weavers to bring them to the front stage. She initiated the promotion of saree social media movement to make people aware of the Indian weavers.
